Teachers for August 2001
have already been selected.
Teachers will be able to receive
credit for this summer program
Teachers will sharpen their observational skills and learn by taking part in experiences that teach on a non-verbal level (i.e., ceremonies, journal writing). They will find many opportunities to learn, but at the same time, not everything will be "taught". Following Native traditions, teachers will also absorb knowledge by simply being present and participating.

We cannot assume, however, that simply being present will ensure that everyone "sees". Research has shown that being exposed to another culture often merely reinforces previously held beliefs and stereotypes. Therefore, we will go the next step and gently draw attention to the underlying values that are being displayed.

Informally and at workshop sessions, Woody Morrison, Anna Richert, Christina Mader, David Fore and other workshop leaders will help the teachers mediate
their experiences. They will aid them by answering questions and assisting them when they feel the need to have an experience translated into words.

It is probable that teachers will go back to a mainstream society that offers little support to the Native world view to which they have been exposed for a week. Anna Richert’s journal-writing sessions will provide a method for their continued professional growth. She will encourage the forming of dialogue journal partnerships that will extend beyond the Summer of the first Gathering.

Teachers must apply individually and submit an essay explaining why they want to participate in The Gathering for EcoCulture, what they will contribute to The Gathering, and how they will apply the lessons/curriculum learned at The Gathering to their classrooms. The principal from each of the participating schools must submit a letter of support and recommendation of each teacher applicant.

Teachers will also learn from Advisor and California Tribes’ Consultant Melissa Nelson, President of the Cultural Conservancy and Program Planner Woody Morrison how to approach local tribes and Native organizations to solicit their involvement. Additionally, they will have a hot-line available to them for help with curriculum development once they are back in school.
